Historical Walking Tour

Take a self-guided walking tour of Montgomery, MN's charming historic district.

About Montgomery Museum in the Streets

Step back in time and experience the heart of Montgomery through its beautifully preserved Historic District. Located primarily along 1st Street (the main street), this area showcases over 30 historic buildings that reflect the community’s rich Czech heritage, railroad roots, and enduring small-town charm.

Montgomery was established in the mid-1870s and quickly flourished as a railroad hub with a strong agricultural base. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the downtown district had become the center of commerce, banking, and community life. Most of the buildings you’ll see were constructed between 1877 and 1940, featuring distinctive Commercial, Italianate, and Neoclassical architectural styles. Many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Montgomery's Commercial Historic District.

This self-guided walking tour invites you to explore at your own pace, guided by stories, photos, and an interactive map that bring the past to life. From early drugstores and hotels to a beloved family-run bakery still in operation, each stop reveals the legacy of the people and businesses that built this vibrant Minnesota town.

Whether you're a visitor discovering Montgomery for the first time or a longtime resident seeing it through new eyes, we hope this journey through history connects you with the spirit of our community.
