Tour Overview
Enjoy wonderful native bush just a short walk from Matiatia Ferry terminal. This walk ends near a wonderful selection of vineyards and olive grove tasting room.
This short walk is an amazing way to dissapear into lesser well known tracks, native bush and birdsong. Step off the ferry and away from the crowds within minutes.
There are steps and hilly terrain with tree roots and other obstacles which can make it tricky underfoot (and can be muddy after rain).
The track goes through the Forest and Bird owned Atawhai Whenua Reserve and shows the remarkable transformation since 1993 to turn deforested and degraded land back to thriving bush filled with birdsong and life.
This walk is dog on-lead friendly (please be vigilant around wildlife and birds especially Korora Penguins).
Many thanks to Forest & Bird for their continued kaitiakitanga (stewardship) of this beautiful community path.
