Tour Overview
The Tarata Track is a favourite for visitors to Whakanewha Regional Park. It is an easy, 1.8km trail that highlights some of the common trees of Waiheke Island. This self-guided walk will help you identify these trees and learn about the park.
There are several ways you can enjoy this walk and find out more about the trees:
- just wander the track and see the names of some of the trees along the way.
- pick up a the printed guide at the start of the trail and get some more information about these trees.
- use this link to download the guide (which saves paper).
Get the most out of the walk
Use this app to see photos of the trees and related species, and for further information. You can also use this app at home, before or after your walk. The map can be used to check where you are, and where the next stop is.

There are 20 stops along the way. Simply click ‘next’ to move to the next stop or use the keypad to type the number for each stop.
When you finish
Come back the way you came, or make a loop by heading down the Nīkau Track to the beach and returning to the start via the Kōwhai Track.
