When the Lantern Is Lit

Maryborough’s grand old streets have witnessed triumph, tragedy, and whispers of the unexplained. As the lantern is lit, step quietly into the shadows and explore the town’s hidden past. Some stories are well recorded in history… and some, locals say, still linger in the dark.

1

Stop 1

Some say the river gives back sounds before it gives back the dead — boots on wet timber, a splash in the dark, and then… nothing.

2

Stop 2

The lane beside the hall was once thick with labourers, carts, and cargo. Now, the loudest thing some claim to hear there is a single set of boots with no one inside them.

3

Stop 3

A few visitors have said the upper floor never feels entirely vacant after dark — as though one last patron still lingers near the stairwell, unwilling to leave.

4

Stop 4

The Bond Store once held rum, tobacco, and other valuable cargo under lock and guard. Perhaps that is why some say it still feels watched when the rooms fall quiet.

5

Stop 5

Nothing entered Maryborough’s port without being recorded here. Some like to say one careful watcher never stopped checking what came and went.

6

Stop 6

When the music is gone and the lawns fall still, some say a small figure in old-fashioned clothes can sometimes be glimpsed near the bandstand — only for a second, and never twice.

7

Stop 7

After the SS Gothenburg disaster was spoken of in port towns like Maryborough, stories followed close behind — lights over dark water, shapes in mist, and souls said to be searching for shore.

8

Stop 8

For decades this Post Office handled letters, telegrams, and news from distant places. Some say that after dark the quiet halls feel watched — as though the building is still waiting for messages that never arrived.

9

Stop 9

City Hall was built for music, celebration, and grand gatherings. Perhaps that is why some believe the echoes inside it have never entirely died away.

10

Stop 10

The Annie Rixson case is often considered one of Queensland’s earliest recorded tales of a ghost linked to the discovery of a murder.

11

Stop 11

Once a busy gateway to the town, the station now sits empty. Yet a few visitors claim the platform can feel strangely occupied after dark.

Farewell

Our walk through the shadows of old Maryborough now comes to an end. Thank you for walking these lantern-lit streets with me tonight.

And should you pass one of these places again after dark…pause for a moment.

Sometimes the past has a curious way of reminding us it was never entirely left behind.
