The Sphinx Quarter is one of the Netherlands’ most successful examples of urban transformation. Where the pottery and sanitaryware factories of the Sphinx industrial complex once dominated the cityscape, a vibrant new district has emerged in which industrial heritage and contemporary architecture complement and strengthen one another.

The monumental factory buildings have been given new life as cultural meeting places, educational facilities, homes and creative workspaces. Icons such as the Eiffel Building, Lumière Cinema and Muziekgieterij demonstrate how industrial heritage can be adapted to the needs of the 21st century while respecting its history.
