Exploring the Historic Bentonville Jail Building: A Relic of Time and Crime

Welcome to the heart of Bentonville, where history isn't just preserved; it's alive with tales of old sheriffs and quirky anecdotes. The Benton County Sheriff's Office, established in 1836, is not just a law enforcement hub but a tapestry of the town's rich past.Gideon G. Pace, the first Sheriff of Benton County, was elected in 1836. Imagine a time when Bentonville was just a speck on the map, and Pace was laying down the law in what was then the frontier of Arkansas. The office he served in was far from the modern facility you see today, with the first courthouse built in 1837 right in the heart of what would become downtown Bentonville. Civil War Era: During the turbulent times of the Civil War, the sheriff's office played a pivotal role. The area was used as a staging ground for Confederate forces before the Battle of Pea Ridge. The office, back then, would have been a blend of a community center and a stronghold, witnessing the passage of soldiers, spies, and the occasional skirmish. The Last Legal Hanging: One of the most dramatic stories from the sheriff's office history is the last legal hanging in Bentonville in 1876. It was a spectacle that turned into a community event, with residents gathering to witness justice, or perhaps what was considered justice at the time, at the scaffold just west of where the Razorback Inn once stood.
