About This Experience

Welcome to the Plateau Pacers 5th Anniversary Community Walk and the Africatown Living Stories Tour.

This unique experience combines fitness, history, and storytelling as you travel through the streets of Plateau and Africatown, one of the most historic communities in America. Along this 5K route, you will discover the people, places, and events that helped shape the community for more than a century.

As you walk, you will encounter historic churches, family homes, schools, businesses, parks, community gathering places, and landmarks that have played important roles in the lives of local residents. Through photographs, videos, oral histories, and written narratives, you will learn about educators, athletes, entrepreneurs, civic leaders, midwives, ministers, and everyday citizens whose contributions helped build and sustain this community.

The tour features stories of local legends such as Cleon Jones, the 1969 Miracle Mets World Series champion; Mama Thelma Schamberger, the beloved midwife who delivered thousands of babies; and countless other residents whose lives helped shape Plateau and Africatown.

You will visit locations connected to Mobile County Training School, Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, First Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, Kidd Park, the Omotunde Mural, historic businesses, family homes, and community institutions that continue to influence the neighborhood today.

More than a history tour, this experience preserves the memories, stories, and traditions passed down through generations. Many of these stories come directly from longtime residents whose personal recollections help bring the community's history to life.

As you make your way through the route, take your time, explore each stop, and enjoy the opportunity to experience Plateau and Africatown through the eyes of the people who call it home.
