Tour Overview
Welcome to the Huntsville Heritage Walking Tour, curated by the Huntsville and Area Historical Society, a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of our local history and built heritage.
Our town's name was derived from Captain George Hunt, the first permanent settler of the village in 1869. While the histories contained in this tour cover the town's foundation, it is important to remember that these lands were the traditional territories of the Anishinaabeg, specifically the Chippewa, Ojibwa and Potawatomi peoples, under the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850 and the Williams Treaties of 1923. The learning we promote about those who have come before us helps to create connection and interest in preserving what history and built heritage remains today.
With the help of the Muskoka Heritage Place, this app uses archival photos to explore the 'then and now' of our town over the past 150 years. Join us in learning about the stories and histories that keep our heritage alive!
As you progress through the tour, each stop is accompanied by a written and audio description of the building, along with interesting photographs. The audio is designed to play once you reach a stop on the tour, but you are welcome to move and learn at your own pace. Be sure to check back throughout the summer and fall as we continue to add new stops and points of interest!
Special thanks to the Huntsville Municipal Accommodation Tax Association for their generous grant which enabled the self-branding of this app!
