Tour Overview
The East Bluff Trail at Devil's Lake State Park is a spectacular hiking route that winds along the eastern shore of Devil's Lake, offering breathtaking views, challenging terrain at times, and the opportunity to experience nature's beauty at its best. The East Bluff Trail boasts some of the most breathtaking views in Devil's Lake State Park. As you ascend the trail, you'll be treated to sweeping vistas of the shimmering blue waters of Devil's Lake below, framed by towering quartzite bluffs and colorful forested slopes. The contrast between the rugged cliffs and the tranquil lake creates a scene of unparalleled natural beauty.
From the North Shore, The hike begins with a short walk across the existing railroad tracks and parking lot. Watch for the East Bluff sign. You'll start your hike with an ascent up stone stairs to a small rock outcrop that most likely was once used as a shelter. The path winds its way up and down the East Bluff and around rock outcrops where you can take some time to rest and admire these unique geological formations. From the path you will have many opportunities to take astounding photos of the lake far below and the beautiful rocks sporting nature's hues. The path winds into the forest where you can continue on to view the famous Balance Rock or take a turn and walk back through the East Woods to where you began your hike.
From the South Shore (Balanced Rock), the East Bluff path begins after crossing the railroad tracks. The rocky, uneven climb up the bluff is steep and narrow, with areas that are particularly challenging. This is the Balanced Rock Trail. Individuals with mobility or balance difficulties may find this path difficult to navigate. Likewise, this path may prove quite challenging and unsafe for young children. The rock surfaces can be slippery when wet from dew or rain.
