This hotel was built in 1858 and was destroyed by fire in 1905. The old Ashland Hotel provided weekend getaways for Richmonders who made the trip by rail to enjoy the country air. The Civil War closed the hotel for 10 years. In 1868 Randolph-Macon College moved the college to Ashland and acquired the hotel and other buildings for classrooms and dorms. The second hotel built and the first to be named The Henry Clay Inn® was built on the original site of the Ashland Hotel in 1906. This inn was enjoyed for the next 40 years by R-MC students for balls and parties and later as living accommodations for newlyweds until suitable housing could be afforded. This inn burnt down to the ground on February 27, 1946. There were no injuries and most of the town’s residents turned out to help put out the fire. The present day Henry Clay Inn opened on April 10, 1992. The exterior of the inn is an exact replica of its predecessors.

Cox purchased two adjoining lots at the southwest corner of Railroad Avenue and Thompson Street. Here they built a two-story department store. D.B. Cox died in 1925 and James M. Cox continued running D.B. Cox and Co. Department Store until his death in1951. When the business was sold in 1955, it was the oldest business in Ashland. Origin Beer Lab
Origin Beer Lab, 106 S. Railroad Ave.Origin Beer Lab was built for research, development, and teaching of all things beer. As our sister company Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU) increases its distribution footprint in Virginia, it is important to us that we are able to continually tweak, enhance, and create new beers. Origin allows COTU more room and an adequate pilot system to do this on. At Origin, we'll be tweaking recipes, creating new ones, and experimenting with sours on a system that is completely scaleable. One of the reasons we love making beer is experimenting with new flavors and techniques. Origin will allow our brewers to explore some innovative andcreative brewing without impacting the capacity of our current operation. Our inner nerds are very excited!http://www.originbeerlab.com Wednesday-Thursday: 4pm – 9pm Friday: 4 pm – 10 pm Saturday: 1 pm – 10 pm Sunday: 11 am – 6 pmShort History of 106 S. Railroad Ave.Early in the morning of July 26, 1893, a major fire destroyed or heavily damaged most of the businesses on the west side of the tracks. The 1893 fire started in a stable behind Mrs. Sinclair’s new millinery and jewelry shop, but she did not rebuild. Where her store had been at 106 S. Railroad Ave., J.G. Hughes built a two-story building for his drug store. He had opened his store in 1889 on England Street, and in 1901, he moved into his new building. Look up at the roofline and you can still see his name carved in a cement plaque. Today Origin Beer Lab is on the first floor and The Tinder Guest House is on the second floor.

Trackside Grill
Trackside Grill, 301 S. Railroad Ave.The Trackside Grill, whose name was derived as an intended pun, has nothing to do with the railroad it lies next to, but rather the pictures of local and famous racehorses that line the walls inside. And, "if the walls could talk...," one would learn of all the past businesses it has housed including a bowling alley, a gym, a supply store, several other restaurants, and most notably, the first real movie theater in Ashland. Some local characters, and even our own staff, claim that the restaurant is still haunted!http://www.tracksidegrillva.comSunday-Thursday: Lunch 11 am – 5 pm; Dinner 5 pm – 9 pmFriday & Saturday: Lunch 11 am – 5 pm; Dinner 5 pm – 10 pmShort History of 301 S. Railroad Ave.This building was first used as a movie theatre. There was a balcony for African-Americans and white patrons sat on the main floor. A new theatre was built in 1948. The new theatre wasn't integrated until the 1970s and it did not have a balcony for non-whites. Blacks continued to use this theatre until it was sold in 1958 and became a stationery store.
