Tour Overview
The houses along South Center Street tell the story of 19th century Ashland, from the antebellum period just before the Civil War to about 1900.
Ashland’s population in 1860 was 148, and by 1870, the town had more than doubled to 491. At the close of the century, Ashland was home to 1,147 people. Families stayed and others moved here in part because of the opportunities afforded by the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac (RF&P) Railroad and Randolph-Macon College.
