Tour Overview
The area around Henry and Berkley Streets was settled in the years after the Civil War by several African-American families: the Winstons, the Burrusses and Edward Berkeley. Berkeley owned a number of acres, and in 1894, his estate began subdividing his property. The corner of Henry and Berkley Streets was the center of Berkleytown. This African-American neighborhood became part of the Town of Ashland in the 1970s.
