Historic Downtown Oakland

Downtown Oakland has many historical attractions including three museums; the Transportation Museum, Oakland B&O Museum and Garrett Historical Museum. Visit the Oakland Walking Trail for a hike along the LIttle Youghiogheny River. You can even see where George Washington stopped along the river to drink from a natural spring.

Maryland's Highest Point

Take an amazing drive to the very southern end of Garrett County and into West Virginia to access the Maryland High Point Trail that will lead you to Hoye-Crest at 3,360 feet above sea level. To access the trail, there is a pull-off on Rt. 219 just south of Silver Lake.*Photo credit: Mary Callis

(Bonus Stop) Smallest Church in 48 States (Silver Lake, WV)

"Our Lady Of The Pines" is a small, well-kept Roman Catholic church in rural West Virginia. It has been promoted on old vellum postcards as the "Smallest Church in 48 States." Even today, a sign makes this odd claim to fame (Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states in 1959). A long-neglected update, or some civic pride sleight-of-hand? Perhaps the two missing states are whichever of the 50 contain the reigning 1st and 2nd smallest churches.The church contains seating for 12, and the exterior measures 24 ft. x 12 ft. African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME)

Take a drive by the only African-American Church in Garrett County. Circa 1900-1920's. The church was removed from Oakland to this site around 1934 and used as a carriage shop.

Loch Lynn Wetland Walking Trail

Enjoy a beautiful 0.6 mile wetland walking trail that features an elevated boardwalk over a wetland area. There are many opportunities for exploration of the ecosystem and observation of the plant and wildlife that live here. As you make your way through the trail, take the time to view the informational signs that explain what a wetland is, what type of plants grow here and what types of wildlife live here.
