Garrett County Historical Society and Museum - B & O/Garrett Room
The B&O/Garrett Room interprets the life of John Garrett and the impact of the B&O Railroad in Garrett County.America's first railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio was begun in Baltimore in 1827 as a means of connecting Baltimore to the Ohio River more than three hundred miles away. While investors were skeptical of the ability of the railroad to successfully transport people and goods over a great distance, the first train was loaded and made the trip without incident. For years the B&O remained the premier means of transportation. John Work Garrett was elected President of the B&O in 1858, and on one visit west stopped in a small town in Western Maryland. He fell in love with the beautiful landscape of Oakland, and built a cottage in Deer Park. In 1872, the westernmost tract of land separated from Allegany County, and a new county was established. Garrett County was named after John Work Garrett to honor his contributions to the area, and Oakland became the county seat.Location: 107 South Second Street, Oakland, MDHours:Museum Summer Hours: May 1st.
