Barn Quilt #17 County Fair

Start at Garrett County Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center, 15 Visitor Center Drive, McHenry, MD. Turn right on to Garrett Highway (US-219 South). Barn Quilt #17 County Fair owned by the Garrett County Agricultural Fair, Inc. will be on the left.

Deep Creek Lake Scenic Overlook

Stop at the Deep Creek Lake Scenic Overlook on the right 1.3 miles from the Visitors Center. Notice the historical marker: Col. James McHenry of Baltimore McHenry, Garrett County. As you continue south on 219, look for historic markers from Thayer Game Refuge and Deep Creek Lake (both on the east side of 219).

Bloomington Viaduct

Continue 6.9 miles. Turn left onto Sand Flat Road. Turn left onto Maryland 135 (flashing light intersection). This is part of the Mountain Maryland Scenic Byway. Turn right to continue on MD 135 toward Bloomington/Westernport and the Bloomington Viaduct. Built in 1851, this sandstone bridge has three full center arches, each with a 56' span and a 28' rise. When first built, it carried a double track of the original Baltimore and Ohio main line across the Potomac River to Mineral County, West Virginia. (For a better look, turn right onto Hamill from 135, and turn left onto Owens.)

Savage River State Forest

Turn left on Raley Avenue. The Savage River is located to your right and the B&O Railroad tracks to your left. Turn right to stay on Savage River Road and continue your drive through Savage River State Forest. The Savage River Reservoir entrance put in for kayaking/canoeing will be on your right. Bear Pen Run Natural Area will be on your left on Bear Pen Road.

Monroe Run Scenic Overlook

Turn left on to Dry Run Road. Turn right onto Blackhawk School Road (.5 miles past Misty Mountain Road) Turn left onto New Germany Road. Monroe Run Scenic Overlook is approximately 1 mile from the turn. The parking area is on the right.

Barn Quilt #2 Ohio Star

Turn sharp right onto Bittinger Road/ MD495 (Scenic Byway) approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto Rock Lodge Road (Brenneman's Store is at the intersection). Barn Quilt #2 Ohio Star is on a barn owned by Wendall and Ruth Beitzel at 7644 Rock Lodge Road, Accident, MD. From here, go 5.7 miles and turn right onto Mosser Road, just past Glades Way. (It is a T intersection; turn before the blue barn.) Turn right onto Garrett Hwy/US-219 at the light to return to the Garrett County Visitors Center.
