Shakespear Explorer

Welcome to the Shakespear Explorer App! Created by Shakespear Open Sanctuary (SOSSI) volunteers and launched in January 2020, this app will help you get a taste of all the wonderful sights and experiences that Shakespear Open Sanctuary has to offer. It was made possible thanks to a fundraising event run by Gulf Harbour Country Club involving many local businesses and we thank them all for their support.

Shakespear became a Regional Park in 1973 and is owned and managed by Auckland Council, working in partnership with SOSSI. In 2011 the predator proof fence was installed and a large part of the park, as well as the land owned by the Defence Force, became an Open Sanctuary. We hope you enjoy exploring this special place.

The app includes 2 starter trails. Simply download the trails you want whilst on Wifi, then they will work at the park without internet connection or phone signal.

- the Kaitiaki Trail, for adult and youth visitors, which brings you highlights of the conservation stories of Shakespear
- the Tamariki Trail – for children aged 5-12, which takes you on an adventure with Kare the Kiwi, using all your senses and looking for hidden signs.

Each trail has a series of stops featuring information, videos or photos and directions to the next stop. To get notified when you reach each stop, ensure you have “notifications turned on” for the app, plus sound turned up on your phone. Click on the map icon to show the trail route and your location too.

We hope to add more trails in the future and would love your feedback on the app and trails so far. Please email info@sossi.nz or message us on Facebook @SOSSI.NZ
