Tour Overview
Explore and learn more about how gold is extracted from the rock beneath our feet at New Zealand’s largest gold mine with OceanaGold’s new Self-Guided Tour.
Visitors can now get a closer look at OceanaGold’s modern mining practices with new viewing areas into active parts of the mine site and interactive installations including the retired Caterpillar 5230B excavator and a full-sized haul truck tyre.
With a rich history of early gold mining in the area, the tour also features restored artifacts at the Gravel Pumping Display, buildings associated with the historic Macraes Township and links with the Department of Conservation Golden Point Historic Reserve including the historic Callery’s Battery, the best surviving example of a working stamper battery on its original site.
Located next to the Macraes township in East Otago, the OceanaGold Macraes Operation has been operating since 1990, producing over five million ounces of gold.
OceanaGold Macraes became the Founding Partner of the Waitaki Whtestone Geopark in 2019. Their sponsorship primarily supports community engagement and education by the Geopark's geoeducator.
