Tour Overview
New Zealand was once home to the now extinct Moa - one of the biggest birds to have ever lived! The Waitaki Moa Trail links moa and moa-related sculptures throughout the district. Follow the trail to discover different sculptures of these magnificent birds.
For each spot and moa, there is a patai / question. You can check the answers at the Waitaki Museum in Ōamaru.
This seld-guided trail was developed for the Waitaki Arts Festival 2023 by the Forrester Gallery, Te Whare Taoka o Waitaki (Waitaki Museum and Archive), and the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark.
Please note that for some stops there may be a cost to view. In addition, Some scultures are in private property. You may view from the footpath but please do not enter the property unless you ask permission from the owner.
Safety First! Please take extra care when you are viewing moa by roads and waterways. Always supervise tamariki.
