Tour Overview
The history of Auckland’s live music scene is spread throughout the central city, extending back to the variety shows of the early 1900s through to the jazz and rock of the '50-'60's coffee lounge, and on to the emergence of punk, R&B, hip hop, and dance music.
The tour starts in Aotea Square and weaves its way down the side streets along Queen Street to the busy 1960's nightlife district that once existed around modern-day Britomart, taking time to point out landmarks and decipher clues to where missing venues once stood.
Commissioned by Auckland Live to celebrate NZ Music Month 2021, Music historian Gareth Shute created this walking tour with the support of NZ music website AudioCulture to invite you to imagine the city's legendary music venues of lore and appreciate those that still stand today.
